Scrip – What is scrip?
Scrip is a term that means “substitute money.” When Corpus Christi parishioners purchase scrip, they’re purchasing negotiable gift certificates that are used just like cash. The scrip is issued by the national and local retailers where many of us already shop. These merchants want to support non-profit organizations, and in return ask you to support them by shopping with scrip at their stores. We can use scrip to purchase everyday expenses like food, clothing, and other essentials, and with every purchase, they earn revenue for Corpus Christi.
How scrip generates revenue for Corpus Christi
The Great Lakes Scrip Center acts on behalf of churches, schools and other non-profit organizations to purchase large amounts of scrip from grocery stores, department stores, restaurants and other retailers. Because the scrip is purchased with cash up front, the participating retailers offer a substantial discount. Corpus Christi buys the scrip from the Great Lakes Scrip Center and some local retailers at a discount, and re-sells the certificates to parishioners for full face value. The bulk of the discount – from 2 to 15% or more – is retained by Corpus Christi as revenue.
Scrip for Tuition
A portion of each parish family’s scrip proceeds can be directed toward student tuition at Corpus Christi each school year, if you so choose. Once your family has purchased enough scrip to generate $50 in profit for Corpus Christi, you may begin applying 50% ($25) of that toward your child’s tuition and the other 50% ($25) to the church. The more scrip you by, the more money you can save on tuition and raise for the parish. Scrip reports detailing how much you’ve earned for tuition are provided prior to registration each school year.
